1999Under his pseudonym Sven Simon, Axel Springer Jr., the publisher’s eldest son, became one of the finest press photographers of his time. His legendary images include the disappointed captain of the German national team, Uwe Seeler, after the lost 1966 World Cup final; Willy Brandt’s kneeling in Warsaw in 1970; and images from Israel’s defensive wars. Today, the WELT am SONNTAG “Sven Simon Prize” honors his memory by recognizing the outstanding sports photographs of the year.
