1952BILD’s editorial dachshund “Rübezahl” was given to the BILD team by an enthusiastic reader as early as 1952, after the first issue. Two years later, he became part of major political advocacy. He was the symbol for a series of BILD articles in which the newspaper campaigned against the then-permitted slaughter of dogs and cats for consumption. Today, around 200 employees’ dogs accompany their owners to work at the Berlin location.

Axel Springer was a great dog lover. This photo shows the young Axel Springer and his mother Ottilie with their two schnauzer mixes at the family’s holiday home in the Lüneburg Heath. One quote attributed to him reads: “I had two Essentials right away: we were for reunification and against the slaughter of dogs.”
