1968The publisher was a sports fan, and his football heart beat for Berlin’s Hertha. In 1966, players from the club visited the publishing house. In 1968, Axel Springer donated 300,000 euros to the chronically cash-strapped club. For him, the club’s place in the top division was not only a sporting matter – he saw Bundesliga membership as a signal of West Berlin’s connection to the Federal Republic.
