17BILD Lilli

1955In the very first issue of BILD on June 24, 1952, the illustrated character Lilli appeared: a young woman who commented on current affairs and everyday life with wit and intelligence. She was also an early example of how Axel Springer challenged traditional role clichés. From 1955, the comic character became a doll that found its way to the United States, where Mattel developed its own doll with knowledge of Lilli. A legal dispute ended successfully for Mattel, which acquired the rights to the BILD doll. Lilli became Barbie – the most famous doll in the world.
